What is Hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver which can be transmitted sexually. Only a small amount of contaminated blood is required to spread the infection, which may also be present in bodily fluids such as saliva and vaginal secretions.
Infection often occurs through unprotected sexual interaction but can also be transferred via contaminated objects such as needles (for recreational drug use), unsterilized tattoo equipment, and work-related accidents, particularly in healthcare.

How is Hepatitis B treated?
If you test positive for Hepatitis B, your Better2Know Doctor will advise you to see a specialist. They will carry out further testing to see the effect the virus is having on your body, as well as the best treatment options for you.
Most people who test positive find that their immune system will fight off the virus on its own, but careful monitoring of the infection is always necessary. A specialist will be able to provide the right treatment for you if the disease is more advanced.
Antiviral medication will be prescribed, and you may need to take it for up to six months to clear the virus from your body. Regardless of whether the infection is producing symptoms or not, you are advised to avoid alcohol, get plenty of rest and maintain a healthy diet.
