Which Better2Know screens include Ureaplasma testing?

What is Ureaplasma?

Ureaplasma can occur naturally in the healthy genital tracts of both men and women. A Ureaplasma infection does not mean that your partner has been unfaithful, it can occur when there has been no sexual interaction. It causes irritation when the colony of bacteria overgrows. Once the infection is present then it can be transmitted sexually.

What are the symptoms of Ureaplasma?

Unusual urethral discharge

Painful urination

Urethral irritation

Feeling the need to urinate more frequently

Unusual vaginal discharge

Painful urination

General discomfort in the genital area

Feeling the need to urinate more frequently

What happens if I do not get tested and treated?

Intensified symptoms as the STI develops, such as painful urinary infections

Loss of fertility and prolonged, possibly increased, suffering of symptoms

How is Ureaplasma treated?

Ureaplasma is curable and can be treated with a short course of antibiotics. If your Ureaplasma test is reactive, our sexual health advisory team can arrange a private consultation with a Better2Know doctor. The doctor will discuss your diagnosis with you and provide you with a prescription for the necessary medication. You may also decide to take another test at the end of your treatment to ensure that the infection has completely cleared.

What else should I get tested for?

Sexually transmitted infections such as Gardnerella, Mycoplasma and Trichomonas are often associated with women who may be suffering from discomfort around the genital area and a ‘fishy’ odour. In such instances, the Better2Know Comfort Screen may the best option for you as it looks for common STIs that can cause these symptoms. This does not mean males cannot acquire such bacterial infections and Better2Know’s range of screens accommodate both men and women. Our trained sexual health advisors can provide guidance and help you find the screen that most suits your requirements.
